Dr. Perlyn oversees the university’s health care network composed of eight colleges that provide educational degrees and pursue research initiatives, as well as NSU Health, its patient-centric, integrated health care network of clinics and centers.
He also is a professor of health sciences at NSU’s Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine.
He joined NSU in December 2024 after serving as senior vice president of surgical services, community health, and corporate responsibility at Nicklaus Children’s Health System.
Dr. Perlyn is a distinguished leader in health care and a prominent figure in the field of plastic and craniofacial surgery.
He had a major impact on the Nicklaus Children’s Health System after joining the organization as a pediatric plastic surgeon in 2009, serving as president of Nicklaus Children's Pediatric Specialists (NCPS), medical director of Surgical Services at Nicklaus Children's Hospital, chairman of the Nicklaus Children’s Ambulatory Surgical Center, and chief of the NCPS Division of Plastic Surgery. He was also chief of the Division of Plastic Surgery and an associate professor at the Florida International University Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine.
Under Dr. Perlyn's leadership, Nicklaus Children's Health System saw significant growth, including a 50 percent increase in the size of its physician group practice. The system now has 290 physicians, 165 advanced practice providers, and 365 support staff. He also led several major affiliations and the development of new practice sites and programs. He prioritized clinician development and integration, implementing initiatives such as a physician compensation plan, leadership programs, and cultural enhancement efforts.
Dr. Perlyn modernized operational functions, improving access for patients, streamlining scheduling systems, and enhancing revenue cycle functions. He also managed surgical services and led strategic planning, community health, marketing, corporate responsibility, and philanthropic efforts.
He oversaw the opening of the Kenneth C. Griffin Surgical Tower, a transformative $180 million initiative aimed at revolutionizing pediatric surgical care in South Florida.
Dr. Perlyn is a global health leader and was deeply involved in Haiti following its 2010 earthquake. He works closely with the G4 Alliance on issues related to surgical care in middle- and low-income countries and with Partners in Health in Haiti and Kausay Wasi in Peru among many more, where he strives to make health care accessible, affordable, and adaptable for all.
He maintains a practice as a pediatric plastic surgery and cares for infants and children with congenital differences.
Dr. Perlyn is Board certified in plastic surgery and is an important contributor to the field through publications, national and international lectures, and media commentary.
He earned his M.D. degree at the University of Miami and did surgical training at Washington University/Barnes-Jewish Hospital. He completed a doctorate in craniofacial molecular biology at the University of Oxford under his fellowship from the American College of Surgeons. He holds a master’s degree in business administration in health care education from the University of Miami’s Herbert Business School and earned his undergraduate degree in English literature from Northwestern University.
