Frequently Asked Transfer Credit Questions

How many credits can I transfer into the university?

We will transfer a maximum of 90 degree-applicable credits from a regionally accredited institution toward a degree, including credit for the College-Level Examination Program (CLEP), proficiency exams, and prior experiential learning. In addition, you must earn at least 50 percent of your major at NSU.

Do you accept courses from non-regionally accredited institutions?

No, we only accept coursework completed at an institution that is governed by one of the major accrediting bodies. These include; Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA), Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU), North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA), New England Association of School and Colleges (NEASC), Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) and Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).

I served in the military, can I get transfer credit for my service?

What is the lowest grade that will be accepted for transfer credit?

We will transfer courses from previous institutions in which you have earned a grade of C or higher. The only exception occurs when you meet the SACSCOC Transfer Policy, in which the lowest grade accepted for transfer credit is a D, as long as the credit has been earned and your academic program at NSU permits the grade.

How do I know if I qualify for the SACSCOC Transfer Policy?

Transfer credit will be accepted if you have earned an Associate in Arts Degree or 60 credits from a SACSCOC-accredited institution and are in good academic standing since the 1992 inception of the Articulation Agreement between Independent Colleges and Universities of Florida (ICUF) and the Division of Florida Colleges.

What benefit do I receive under the SACSCOC Transfer Policy?

If you have earned an Associate in Arts Degree or 60 credits from a SACSCOC-accredited institution and are in good academic standing, as defined by the transfer institution, you shall be admitted to NSU with junior standing. In addition, transfer credit will be accepted for a grade of D, provided the credit has been earned and your academic program at NSU permits the grade.

You may be required to complete additional courses at NSU prior to the awarding of the baccalaureate degree. The additional courses may include general education requirements and may result in graduating with more than 120 credits. Should the maximum timeframe for Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) be exceeded, your financial aid may be impacted.

I would like to transfer to NSU but I want to know how many of my course(s) will transfer into the university. Do you have a tool available that will tell me the course equivalencies for the course(s) I have taken or am interested in taking?

What if the institution(s) I have attended or the course(s) I have taken do not appear or are not listed on the Transfer Credit System?

In the event that you are unable to locate an institution or a course, please complete the Transfer Course Equivalency Request Form for us to determine course equivalencies. You may expect a response within one week of submission.

What does a course number of 1999 or 3999 mean?

Course numbers of 1999 and 3999 indicate that the course is equivalent to undergraduate elective credit at the lower and upper levels, respectively. Prior Learning credit indicates that we do not have an exact course match or the course offered at NSU differs from the course and/or course content taken at the transfer institution.

What happens if the course equivalency has a 1999 or 3999 course number, but I feel that I took the equivalent at my current or prior institution?

You will need to provide a course syllabus to esstes@nova.edu in order to have a course re-reviewed for course equivalency.

I have applied to the university but have not received an evaluation of my previous coursework?

Once you have been admitted into the university and you have submitted any combination of unofficial or official transcripts for every institution attended, we will begin a review of your coursework.

How long does it take to complete an evaluation of my transfer credit?

It can vary depending on several factors. If you attended an institution where a majority of the course equivalencies already exist, the evaluation can be completed quickly. If the institution or course equivalencies do not currently exist in our database, it will take longer. There is not an exact timeline due to the various factors.

I met with my Academic Advisor and they indicated that I will receive less credits than what was listed on the TOC letter that I received. Why?

The TOC letter indicates what is transferable to the university; while a degree evaluation report compares your completed coursework with degree requirements for your chosen program that are published in the college catalog.

I took an Advanced Placement (AP) class, why did I not receive transfer credit?

In addition to taking the course, you must also take the AP exam, receive a passing score and be accepted into the university in order to receive transfer credit.

You must submit the official test scores, receive a passing score and be accepted into the university in order to receive transfer credit.

When are test scores applied to my student record?

All test scores (AP, AICE, IB, CLEP, DSST) are applied to a student’s record upon receipt of the official test scores and acceptance to the university.

Do test scores have to be sent by a certain time for me to get the credit?

CLEP and DSST test scores must be provided prior to you earning 24 credits with the university in order for the credit to be posted to the your record. AICE, AP and IB can be provided at any time.

Can I receive college credit for my work experience?

Yes, you may be eligible to receive credit for your work experience. You may be able to write a portfolio challenging a college level course for credit. You may also be eligible to receive credit for holding certain licenses or if you have taken certain training courses. Is there an assessment fee for receiving credit for my work experience?

Yes, there is a non-refundable fee of $45 per credit for a portfolio review. Additionally, there is a non-refundable fee of $25 per credit for certain licenses, certifications and training courses.
