Internships

Internships provide a way for students to 'get a taste' of what it is like to work in a particular field at a specific organization through a relatively short-term, hands-on experience. Interns get to actually complete work that professionals in their field of interest engage in, taking the knowledge they learn in the classroom and both putting it in to practice and building on it.

Internships are usually several weeks to a full semester in length, though the specifics vary. Some internships are for a limited numbers of hours per week, while others can be full-time, or nearly so.

Students at NSU can complete internships as part of their academic programs or on their own. They also may be eligible to earn academic credit and/or ExEL units for internships, depending on the specifics of their circumstances.

Nova Southeastern University has adopted the National Association of College and Employers (NACE) criteria for defining a quality internship.

  •  The experience must be an extension of the classroom: a learning experience that provides for applying the knowledge gained in the classroom. It must not be simply to advance the operations of the employer or be the work that a regular employee would routinely perform.
  • The skills or knowledge learned must be transferable to other employment settings.
  • The experience has a defined beginning and end, and a job description with desired qualifications.
  • There are clearly defined learning objectives/goals related to the professional goals of the student’s academic coursework.
  • There is supervision and routine feedback by a professional with expertise and educational and/or professional background in the field of the experience.
  • Note: Virtual/remote internships can be approved for either ExEL units or Academic credit. Criteria does include that the company have a legitimate physical work location, even if your internship is virtual. Please see more details in our Virtual Internship Study Guide.
  • Start by reaching out to professionals you already know in your pursued career path. The internship site does not need to be affiliated with NSU. You can also work with your Career/Edge advisor, professors, and peers to leverage any relationships from past internship sites.
  • Consider also searching online for professionals in your local area to call or email their office and ask about internship opportunities. You want to introduce yourself and express your genuine interest to learn more about the field, while being courteous and professional in your outreach.
  • Utilize your online job/internship posting platforms, such as Handshake, LinkedIn, and Glassdoor, to find positions that match your interests and skills. You want to be conducting general searches based on your intended location and title, and later optimize your search with advanced search filters. LinkedIn particularly can be a great place to not just apply for positions, but to also reach out to professionals in companies and organizations you are passionate about.

Shadowing

Shadowing is an experience where students can observe a professional in a field of interest to them on the job. This experience provides students with the opportunity to see what a 'day in the life' of a professional is really like to see if it is truly a field they want to pursue.

Shadowing experiences can be very short, just one time for a few hours, or they can be much more involved, perhaps partial, or even full days, over a semester or more. These experiences are very flexible and are designed out to meet the needs and situations of both the student and the professional being shadowed.

Students at NSU can complete shadowing experiences as part of their academic programs or on their own. They also may be eligible to earn academic credit and/or ExEL units for shadowing, depending on the specifics of their circumstances.
