Supplemental Instruction at NSU

At Nova Southeastern University's Tutoring and Testing Center, we understand that academic success is built on a foundation of peer support and expert guidance. Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a free, peer-led program designed to enhance your understanding of historically challenging courses. SI offers structured study sessions led by students who have successfully completed the course. These sessions are designed to complement your lectures, providing a space to clarify concepts, share study tips, and break down complex material into manageable segments

Getting Started

During the first week of classes, your assigned SI leader will introduce themselves during lecture and set up a course GroupMe. Joining the GroupMe will help you stay updated on SI session days and times, ask questions, and share study materials and study tips with your classmates.

Supplemental Instruction Leaders

SI Leaders are dedicated NSU undergraduate students who have not only excelled in the courses they support but are passionate about helping you achieve the same success. Having mastered the course content, they understand the challenges you face and are committed to guiding you through them. By attending your lectures, they gain firsthand insight into the material, ensuring their support directly aligns with your classroom experience.

More than just students, SI Leaders serve as mentors, fostering a collaborative learning environment where you can actively review class material and prepare for exams. They bring a unique blend of academic expertise and peer understanding, having earned an A or B in the course and maintaining a 3.0 GPA.

We'll also focus on developing effective study skills, covering techniques like memory aids, time management, and test preparation. Occasionally, sessions may include exam reviews or engaging learning activities. The goal is to enhance your understanding of the course content and equip you with valuable learning strategies.
SI sessions are held regularly two times a week. Group study sessions begin during the second week of classes. Additional group study review sessions may be held during upcoming tests or exams.

SI Leaders will visit your class on the first day to discuss the program. You can also can review the list of Courses with SI  and the Schedule of SI Sessions, located on this page, or consult with your professor or academic adviser.

Finally, you can always visit the SI office at the Tutoring and Testing Center, located on the 2nd Floor of the Student Affairs Building or contact us at (954) 262-8391.

Attendance is taken solely for statistical purposes. We will look at each student’s final class grade and actual number of times he/she attended a weekly session, to evaluate per semester/year the effectiveness of the SI program at NSU.

Students who regularly attend SI sessions consistently achieve higher grades and develop stronger study habits. You'll gain a deeper understanding of course content, improve retention, and learn valuable learning techniques.
