Yes. All NSU students who are registered for classes are eligible to enroll in the NSU Student Health Insurance Plan.
Yes. The NSU Student Health Insurance Plan provides coverage throughout the continental United States (all 50 states, not including Puerto Rico).
NSU Student Health Insurance Plan is an all inclusive medical health insurance plan provided to all students registered for courses. The insurance plan must provide primary care, preventative care, woman's healthcare, mental healthcare, specialty care, urgent care, and emergency care.
For questions regarding insurance ID cards, benefits, claims, coverage, health discounts, finding a provider, and any insurance related questions visit uhcsr.com/nova or contact United Healthcare Student Resources at phone: 1-800-767-0700; email: customerservice@uhcsr.com.
At this time the NSU Student Health Insurance Plan has been created for students and does not provide coverage for a spouse or dependants. Also, dental or vision plans are not provided by NSU. NSU is not an insurance company nor a licensed insurance agency. We are unable to provide recommendations for insurance plan options outside of NSU. It is recommended to visit usa.gov/health for further assistance.
Needlestick coverage includes treatment for exposure to or contact of mucous membrane or non-intact skin (e.g., exposed skin that is chapped, abraded, or afflicted with dermatitis) with blood, tissue, or other body fluids that are potentially infectious with Hepatitis B Virus, Hepatitis C Virus, or HIV through needlestick, instruments, or cut with a sharp object. For further information visit the Post Exposure (Needlestick) Policy page.
Please contact NSU's Sterilization department at (954) 262-7352 or 954-262-1926 for assistance in managing the exposure process.
Yes. Preventive care immunizations are covered at 100% (of the negotiated charge).
Students must contact the Student Health Insurance Department in a timely manner to request the student health insurance charge to be reversed. Contact our office by phone (954) 262-4060 or via email studenthealth@nova.edu.
Once you register for classes, the student health insurance charge will be placed on your student account each semester/term. It may take up to 10 business days for United Healthcare's records to register you as an active member. If you need medical services during the processing period, you may contact United Healthcare for further questions about reimbursement by calling 800-767-0700.
Please contact our office immediately to request an expedited enrollment activation. The expedited process typically takes 2-3 business days.
The United Healthcare student health insurance plan is a Choice Plus plan that provides coverage throughout the continental United States.
To locate a In- Network provider, pharmacy, or hospital in your area follow the steps below:
Out-of-network providers may not accept payment of students' cost share (deductible and payment percentage) as payment in full and may therefore bill students for the difference between the amount billed and the amount paid by the plan. If an emergency room facility or physician bills you for an amount above your cost share, you are not responsible for paying that amount. Please send the bill to the address listed on your member ID card and the insurance company will resolve any payment dispute with the provider over that amount. Make sure your member ID number is on the bill.
Well newborn nursery care in a hospital or birthing center is covered for insured mothers. The per admission copayment amount and/or policy year deductible for newborns will be waived for nursery charges for the duration of the newborn’s initial routine facility stay. The nursery charges waiver will not apply for non-routine facility stays.
If you have a leave of absence approved by your academic program office within the first 30 days of your insurance coverage period, the insurance is not offered, and the charge for your student health insurance coverage for the semester/term will be reversed. If your approved leave of absence is in the middle of a semester/term, the policy will remain in effect until the end of said semester/term. For the following semester, if you are not registered, you are not eligible for student insurance provided by the university.
Yes. You may have Student Health Insurance Plan as well as your own personal health insurance plan. However, you must conduct a Coordination of Benefits.
Coordination of Benefits is a way to figure out who pays first when 2 or more health insurance plans are responsible for paying the same medical claim.
You will need to contact both the NSU Student Health Insurance Provider and well as your personal insurance provider and ask to conduct a Coordination of Benefits.
No, you are not able to opt out of the Student Health Insurance Plan after the waiver deadline. You may only complete a waiver and opt out for the upcoming semester prior to the waiver deadline for your program. Once your current coverage period ends, you can enroll into your employer’s insurance plan through a process called "Qualifying Life Event" within 30 days within losing insurance coverage. You may complete a waiver for the next semester. Please contact your human resources representative or benefits coordinator for further details.
In order to access the waiver, you must be registered and charged for student health. Log into NSU eBill to monitor your student account. Please note the waiver can only be completed online.
You will need your insurance ID card, and your insurance coverage information.
Once your waiver application has been approved, please allow up to 10 business days for the charge to be reversed.
If you are entitled to a refund of tuition and fees, the refund will first be applied to any sources of financial aid from which you may have been awarded. Once all balances owed to NSU have been satisfied, any excess funds remaining will be refunded to you. Refunds will generally be delivered to students in the form of a check unless the student has a valid Direct Deposit Authorization on file or payment has been made by credit card or gift card, in which case the excess credit will be returned to the card. Please visit the Bursar's website for more information on refunds of charges, tuition, and fees.
If your current health insurance doesn't meet all six waiver criteria, your waiver request will be denied. However, if you believe your insurance does meet the criteria, you can appeal the decision.
To appeal, you need to act quickly. Contact us within 72 hours of your waiver denial by sending an email to studenthealth@nova.edu with the following information:
If you've had a qualifying life event (like losing coverage involuntarily) and want to enroll in the NSU Student Health Insurance Plan after your waiver has been approved, you have 30 days to do so within your academic year.

When you receive treatment outside of the United States:
Most providers outside the United States will not file a medical claim for you. If that's the case, you'll need to pay the provider in full for your treatment and then file a claim with United Healthcare Student Health Insurance.
What you will need to do:
Get an itemized medical bill from the provider -- in English, if possible -- before you leave the country you are in.
