Colleges and universities use Form 1098-T to report information about tuition, fees, scholarships, and grants posted to a student's account within a tax year (January 1 - December 31) to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) as required by the Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997. The reported information is used to determine eligibility for educational tax credits. For more information on tax benefits for education, review Publication 970 on the IRS website at irs.gov.
In accordance with the IRS requirements, NSU provides each eligible student with a 1098-T Form on an annual basis. The Office of the University Bursar notifies students by NSU email in late January of each year once the 1098-T for the previous tax year (January 1 - December 31) becomes available in SharkLink.
Please note that NSU is reporting the amount paid for qualified tuition and related expenses and not the amounts billed. Therefore, box 2 (amounts billed) remains empty on your 1098-T Form.
IMPORTANT: You must have a valid mailing address on file with the university for your 1098-T to be issued. To verify or update your address, log in to SharkLink and click "View My Profile."
For more information on your 2023 IRS Form 1098-T, review the IRS Instructions for Students.
By completing the Electronic Sign Up Form, you opt in to receiving an email to your NSU email account containing a link for you to access your tax information via your secure SharkLink account each year in January when a new 1098-T becomes available. If you require a paper 1098-T, you may print your 1098-T form displayed in SharkLink or request a copy by completing the Request for Printed 2023 IRS 1098-T Form and emailing it to bursar@nova.edu.

NSU does not mail the 1098-form.
For students requiring assistance with accessing the 1098-T form, please email bursar@nova.edu.
Only qualifying students with a valid mailing address on file with the university. You are a qualifying student if you have had financial transactions posted to your student account during a specified calendar year and you are:
Otherwise, you are a nonresident alien (also known as a "foreign person") for tax purposes and therefore do not qualify for a Form 1098-T.

Like all colleges and universities, NSU is required to submit summary information from your Form 1098-T to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) by the end of March of each year for the preceding tax year. The State of Florida does not require NSU to report Form 1098-T data.
No. You are responsible for making your Form 1098-T available to your parents or tax preparer.

Form 1098-T informs you that you may be eligible for federal income tax education credits. Receipt of the form does not indicate eligibility for any tax credit, nor does it contain all the information needed to claim a tax credit.
If you prepare your own tax returns, keep your Form 1098-T in a file with your other tax documents. You do not need to attach Form 1098-T to your tax returns nor are you required to claim education tax benefits. If you work with a tax preparer or consultant, be sure to submit Form 1098-T along with all other pertinent tax information.
A sample copy of Form 1098-T is available on the IRS Web site at www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1098t.pdf. Beginning with the 2018 tax year, NSU reports the amount of qualified tuition and related expenses you paid during the year in box 2 of your 1098-T.
Form 1098-T, issued in late January of each year, reports information about tuition, fees, scholarships, and grants posted to your account within the previous tax year from January 1 through December 31. For example, your 2021 IRS Form 1098-T will include any payments made from January 1, 2021 to December 31, 2021. Payments made in 2020 or 2022 will not be included.
The most important information on the form is your Social Security Number. The address listed on your 1098-T does not impact the information reported for IRS income tax filing purposes. However, your current preferred mailing address is required for any financial aid refund for which you may be eligible. If you have not already done so, update your address in SharkLink. After logging in with your SharkLink ID and password, click on "View My Profile" on the home page.
Alumni with an active NSU account may access their 1098-T tax information on SharkLink. Select “My Account” from the left navigation and click “View 1098-T” in the Tax Forms section.
Alumni who no longer have SharkLink access may log in to Self-Service Banner (SSB) at ssb.nova.edu using their NSU username and password.

The data reported on your Form 1098-T is for tuition, fees, scholarships, and grants paid to your NSU student account during the calendar year, not the academic year. The amount paid in box 1 will never exceed the amount charged for tuition and fees for the calendar year.
