NSU Peer Educator Program

Grounded in the philosophy that everyone in the community has a role to play in ending sexual violence, the NSU Title IX Peer Educator program aims to provide an opportunity for NSU students to serve as leaders for their peers. The unique opportunity enables students to receive a national certification and to design and facilitate educational workshops aimed at the reduction and prevention of sexual harassment and misconduct of all types.

Program Overview

The Nova Southeastern University Title IX Peer Educator Program provides current undergraduate, graduate, and professional students with a unique opportunity to positively influence campus climate and culture through the design, development, facilitation, and assessment of workshops, programs, and training aimed at awareness-raising and the prevention of sexual misconduct and intimate partner violence.

The certified Title IX Peer Educators, execute programs to address the educational needs of the NSU community. Topics and themes of customizable programs will address:

the prevalence of sexual violence within the university setting;
the spectrum of sexual misconduct;
prevention of sexual assault;
verbal and non-verbal consent (seeking & receiving);
healthy relationships and safe dating practices;
intimate partner violence and unhealthy relationships;
LGBTQI+ sexual harassment;
workplace sexual harassment;
resources for supporting those affected by sexual misconduct;
effective bystander intervention strategies;
... and many more.

Program Goals

Participants in the NSU Peer Educator program will be able to:

Utilize effective communication and facilitation skills to develop and implement effective workshops, presentations and passive programs to educate the campus community.
Teach and role model bystander intervention strategies to reduce or eliminate harm to other students when circumstances present the opportunity to do so.
Articulate and mitigate risks and consequences associated with high-risk drug and alcohol use and non-consensual intimate activities.
Provide trauma-informed support to survivors and persons affected by sexual harassment and misconduct.
Boast a nationally-recognized certification as a public health peer educator.

Learning Curriculum

Through rigorous and ongoing training, Peer Educators will be exposed to a content-rich curriculum aimed at developing proficiency around the following skills:

oral communication and public speaking
drafting learning outcomes
content development
educational facilitation
event planning and logistics
program assessment
conflict resolution
ethical decision-making

The Peer Educator Program now satisfies two (2) co-curricular Experiential Education and Learning (ExEL) units. The purpose of experiential education is to actively engage students through relevant, ongoing experience, active learning, critical problem solving, and reflective practices.

Commitments & Expectations

Those selected to serve as Peer Educators will be expected to agree to the following:

active enrollment at NSU with a minimum GPA of 2.75
participation in ongoing training opportunities
attendance in bi-weekly team meetings
active involvement in planning and executing programming in alignment with national awareness campaigns
ongoing assessment of educational content and delivery
